Home Thai Restaurant, Sussex Street

Although we Empty Fridgers love trying new restaurants - we do have a tendency to keep going back to favorites. Unfortunately for us our favorite thai place always has a long line. Lightbulb moment from Demos who suggested we try Home. Home is a relatively new Thai restaurant on Sussex St in Chinatown; judging from the hustle and bustle we have overlooked it for too long.

As we browse the colourful menus; the airy two story loft literally fills up before our eyes – rightly so because everything on the menu looked delicious. Panic hit when almost every dish pictured had a healthy dose of coriander. It is always Russian roulette for me with my coriander allergies, but I managed to somehow survived.To say that the service is fast is an understatement. They are on another level of efficiency here and my Thai Milk Tea $3.50 arrives without a noticeable wait. Our first dish arrives just as quickly; maybe it's the the ipad ordering system that the waitresses tote about, but service sure is speedy.

PAD KA NA MOO GROB $13.90

The Stir fried crispy pork belly with chilli; garlic, chinese brocolli, oyster and soy sauce was the first dish past the post. The flavours were outstanding, and how can you say no to crunchy pork belly on the menu. The sauce is not spicy at all and although it soaks through the cripspy pork pieces, the crunch still remains. Topped off with some steamed rice, I kept on topping up my portion.

MOO NUE DAD DAEW $8.90

The next dish was the Fried Marinated dried beef, jerky like beef stips coated with peppercorns. The nam jim jiew sauce added an extra dose of pepper and tanginess, so we greedily slathered it on.

 

Full disclosure readers - Chilli and I are not the best of friends. Where Demos can eat the hottest of hot chillies without a watery eye, i just can't hack it at all. Part of the reason we visited Home was that I had a huge hankering for a red duck curry. I dont know if it was the excitement or the hunger, but when I ordered the dish - I forgot to make the "please, not too spicy" request.

GANG DANG PED $13.90

The Roast duck in red curry with cherry tomatoes, lychee, pineaple slices, peas, mushrooms and fresh chilli was a generously sized dish, and 10 points to Home for not skimping on the tender duck meat. I doubt many would even consider this dish spicy at all, but after my first few greedy mouthfuls, I stated welling up. It was heat that my milk tea could not even extinguish - but i kept going in hopes that the sweet lychee and pinapple pieces would help with the burn. No pity from my dining partner either, he was busy picking out the chilli pieces and eating them whole like a hero. Hey, at least it wasn't a coriander attack.

PAR TUNG GO $5 (4 pcs)

True salvation from the chilli burn only came with dessert - my favorite Dough sticks with a pandan and evaporated milk sauce. I coated every milimeter of those dough sticks with the sweet sauce like the survival of my tastebuds depended on it.This has to be one of my favorite desserts - and here at Home, they serve it from 6pm - delicious!

See what I have to deal with? A serial pest that ruins my sexy sauce shot! Lucky for me that Demos' temporary office building is conveniently located next door - guess who will be getting requests for take away dough sticks?

We'll definitely be back for more,no doubt I'll be requesting some toned-down chilli dishes. You can't fault the speedy service and the reasonably priced dishes. If you can take the heat, then its best you head to Home!
