Hunky Dory Social Club, Oxford St Darlinghurst

"Hunky Dory" is a standard response to something just fine, just dandy, not too over the top and exciting, something that is just... hunky dory.
My first visit to Hunky Dory was early this year when it initially opened. I couldn't help but notice the cool little set up while I was driving through Oxford St, a new cocktail bar? I was so there!
Demos and I decided to sneak a cocktail in on a very very busy friday night. Hunky Dory is a seriously cool little venue and its easy to love. There are three levels, all very effortlessly cool - they have an Italian Restaurant, Bruno's on the ground level, a small bar area and DJ set up on the second level and on the third level, a rooftop bar overlooking the madness that is Oxford Street.
Demos always teases me about being one of those birds who are just drawn to random shiny objects and takes them all back to the nest and stashes all the sequins. Yup, thats me. I was drawn to all the shiny fixtures around the rooftop bar, everything fell into place so beautifully and was a contrast to the venues very worn down and industrial feel.
A bit of light reading in a cocktail bar?
A very adorable way to present a killer drinks list, golden books never fail to put a smile on my face! The cocktail menu has had a few additions since our initial visit, but that particular night we ordered the recommendations of a "Killer White Lady" and a "Highland Swig" both $18.
It was a long long wait to get served at the bar, the top level was particularly heaving on the night we first visited it was an absolute shoulder to shoulder struggle to get to the small bar.

Upon placing our order our bartender tells us that he's new and I spy him search frantically for what was a sheet of paper. Ahh the recipe cheat sheet. Fair enough. New place, new staff - its all good. We watched him as he frantically built our beverages, poor new guy did look very nervous. Unfortunately for us, while he was pouring one of the drinks we ended up with half a glass of the white lady. He told us he'd just charge us for just one drink because of the error and the long wait but when we closed our tab we were charged for two. It doesn't really phase me, the cocktails were good and we were there for a good time!
We hung out in the open air rooftop area which makes this spot alone one of my favourite in sydney. The fresh air and the electric atmosphere, the Darlinghurst cool, its pretty awesome - but with the night's packed crowd we thought it would be best to move on for the evening.
And of course, we couldn't be kept away for long.
After finding out that Hunky Dory is weekend friendly and open from 12pm, it has become a favoUrite new sunday session venue. And my goodness, its a whole new world!
We get to the rooftop one glorious sunday afternoon and its absolutely empty. We get the full attention of our super friendly bartender and Rekordelig Pear ciders to quench our thirst. This has to be my favourite cider because its so sugary sweet, it tastes like drinking an alcoholic fizzy juice popper!
And I know, hidden gems don't stay hidden for long when you share them - but my fridgers.. this is one awesome place to kick back and laze about on a sunday afternoon. They have the full menu from the on-site Italian Restuarant Bruno's available! Bruno's pizza was all sorts of goodness - thin, crunchy & loaded with thin slices of prosciutto goodness. The food was reasonably priced too with pizzas starting at $14.
I know we didn't have the best experience from the get go but there was a certain irresistible charm about this place. yes they have scary looking bathrooms (below :) ) and delapitated couches about from the side of the road, but it all comes together and makes sense.
So yes, if your looking for a fun place to kick back, listen to a few tunes and have a a rooftop bar all to yourself, Hunky Dory will be there for your drinking pleasure. It really is a fun addition to the Sydney bar scene and I know i'm going to keep on going back.

Sunday arvo looks perfect. I'm sure the crowds will pick up now that Spring has rolled around.

it certainly has a lot of cool features but i found the staff when i visited loved themselves just a bit too much and thought they were too cool for school. pretentiousness is certainly still alive and kicking in Surry Hills ;-)

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4
year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell
to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off
topic but I had to tell someone!
