Im going to start this post with a blurry photo of the bar because I wouldn't be the empty fridger you have grown to love had I been able to hold my camera straight at Tio's - a fun new establishment dedicated to a liquor close to my heart.
Instead of the usual tea and scones Myself; Demos and our ever reliable honorary fridgemagnet The Gooseman found ourselves at Tio's for a casual and lighthearted tequila throwdown. Well casual and lighthearted was the idea but then when we found ourselves at a tequila bar, all bets were off. This was not a time to do things in halves.
I might start of listing beverages in order of alcohol content. Candidate number one is little miss mexico - the little Coronita. The opportunity was not missed to showcase its teeny tiny size next to Demos' face.
As this was on a Sunday afternoon, the bar wasn't at all packed and we had the attention of the tequilla experts behind the counter. Not that I counted but apparently there are over 70 different types of tequilla on the bar shrine. Now where to start?
From the beer, we progress in order of potency to the varios tequilla cocktails on offer. At $10 a pop for the especiales de la casa (thats house specialties for my non hispanic friends..duh) it was only natural we would work through the above list. Inerestingly we got through 5 out of the 7 on offer. A special mention has to go out to the cafe con leche which on paper is a mix of tequila, Sweetened Condensed Milk and a hot shot of nescafe blend 43. Tequila and Milk you say? Surprisingly, this was a hit - and it tasted similar watered down shot of Patron Cafe. Coffee and tequila is the winning mix in my books; now to convince my barista at work.
To aid our tequilla journey we were given a generous bag of popcorn with chilli powder, the best companion. Our bag was generously replenished between rounds as it came precariously close to being emptied. It's the only bar snack here, but who needs anything else when you have chilli popcorn right?
When you find a great bartender that has the patience to explain the origins of each bottle; its depth; its unique character and flavour - you tend to trust their judgement and let them pour you whatever they recommend. The catch is, trying to retain all that information and regurgitating that in a blogpost - not going to happen in this post friends!
Instead, I encourage you to steer away from your favourite drink - try a new tequila. At Tio's they can give you the best suggestions and steer you away from your order of Patron or Cuervo and get you to try some Ilegal Mezcal. That's what they do best, as well as abolish certain tequila myths about the worms in the bottle. Its all for show I'm told.
A tequila throwdown isn't truly complete until you make friends with an elephant and send stupid text messages to sober people. The owl lanterns that decorate the drinking areas may even start hooting at you. At Tio's this is all possible - with the mini coronitas, reasonably priced cocktails up to the top shelf tequila. Just sit by the bar or at any of the communal tables in this roomy location and limber up for some goodtimes.Tio's Cerveceria, Surry Hills. Open 7 Days, afternoon until evenings.
