Sydney Food and Wine Fair & Norton St Festa 2010

Boo to this horrible temper-mental Sydney weather! One minute the sun is out, and the next - you are stuck in a downpour, it really does play havoc with your health! I have been feeling rather unwell for nearly a week and poor Demos has had to bear the brunt of my whinging. Lucky for me though, the only way he knows how to fix a broken, iron-defficient, and flu struck girlfriend is by offering food..and lots of it!

It was bright and beautiful on the Saturday morning in Hyde Park. Although I hardly had the energy nor motivation to do anything, we decided to head to the Sydney Food and Wine Fair - food fixes everything right? It took a bit of convincing for me to get out of my PJ's and with a bit of flu relief from trusty panadol, we were ready to take on this event with much gusto. Demos' decided that we were guaranteed a good feed here and more importantly, it was for a good cause. The sun was sweltering, and the crowds were well and truly present. This event benefits the AIDS trust of Australia, and organised as part of the Sydney International Food Festival. In its 20th year, very generous restaurants, bakeries, bars and cafe's donate their time and signature dishes to hungry patrons. Upon entry, a sheet of 5 coupons can be purchased for $19 - these tokens are then exchanged for delicious dishes, sweet treats or a refreshing drink. All proceeds of course, are donated to the AIDS trust of Australia and i'm all for eating for a cause!

We did a quick round to see what was on offer, bumping into fellow food bloggers Jacq from Penguin says Feed Me and Simon from The Heart of Food. Demos and I were quick to ask them for their suggestions as to which stalls to attack as we arrived at 1pm and stalls were starting to sell out. I was dizzy with hunger so Demos and I found our first selection - A delicious Chorizo roll from Brasserie Bread. This was a perfect start because we could multitask by eating and browsing the other stalls. This gourmet sandwich was worth 2 coupons and we did not even have to line up!
Its never fun when you have the stay away from the fruity cocktails but finding the Aids Trust Bar stocked with Greek Metaxa Spirit, Demos had to try the fruity concoction. Metaxa is a traditional Greek cognac and they mixed it with Orange juice and tonic water, providing much needed refreshment.
Ninja Domo also had to tag along to provide protection against... now that I think of it I'm not really sure why he tagged along.
The crowds were out in full force - what better way to spend the day than indulging in delicious food at Hyde Park. It sure beats staying in bed and watching Kardashian re-runs on the E! Channel, right?
Everyone was out enjoying the sun, such a beautiful day! Hyde Park is so picturesque in the Springtime!
Our next dish was the Gnocci with Napolitana Sauce from Mezzaluna. I would not usually order gnocci, I find it very starchy and not exciting at all (which is weird because I love potatoes and pastas..) The sauce was not a standout either but we were honestly running out of options of food to buy because everyone was running out of dishes!
One of the dishes that Simon had recommended were the Duck Spring Rolls from the Hungry Duck. I was really excited to try this but unlucky for us, the sold out sign went up as soon as we found the stall!

The Bourke St Bakery stall next door provided a sweet consolation. I order the Pear tart and Demos has the Chocolate tart. I absolutely love the biscuit base and it is a very light dessert. The pear is not sickeningly sweet at all, as I was worried it would make me feel a bit queasy. I was so hungry, my piece disappeared in a minute flat! I was able to sneak a bite of Demos' Chocolate tart and really enjoyed its gooey pudding-like filling.
The Longrain stall had a very long line. I think most of the crowd, like us, were tempted in by the delicious aroma of their Berkshire Pork Yellow Curry. The pork - amazingly tender. The cuts would just melt in your mouth and the curry was not too spicy at all, although it was a bit too hot for the meal. It would be comfort food for a cold day.
We were down to our last tickets, but at this stage most of the stall holders were cleaning up and leaving, and I was still craving some comfort food. As we walked past the Guilliaumme at Bennelong stand, I notice some fresh crepes being prepared. The chef told me this Nutella covered dessert would cost me three coupons, but since I was down to my last two, he was happy to give it to us anyway! What a lovely gesture. It really made me happy that all the restaurant workers that donated their time and efforts on the day were all in a very cheerful mood, I must say it really lifted my spirits!
After only an hour out and about I was ready to call it a day and get back to sick bay. However, we saved the best for last. After lining up for a short while we were given a free scoop of Ben and Jerry's Ice cream - and lucky me, we get my favourite cookie dough flavour too! We headed home with our full tummies, it was a bit too much excitement for my sick self and I didn't leave my room until the next day!

Of course we had to eat on a Sunday too right?...
The Norton St Italian Festa has to be one of my favourite annual community festivals, and I was happy for an excuse to leave sick bay once again. My professional medical opinion was that I was hungry, but as I mentioned before, I am committed to eating. Since I had to visit my GP anyway - we detoured via Leichhardt and met up with our awesome and equally hungry friends and "Mangiare!". We found a spot at the Barilla stand, which offered a $5 meal deal with 2 serves of pasta and a San Pellegrino drink - breadsticks included too!

A food festival wouldn't be complete without the "Chips on a Stick" and for those who are not familiar with this, its basically a whole potato, cut spirally, deep fried on a stick and seasoned with different flavours. I usually order plain salt but the bbq and cheese flavour is just as addictive! Deep fried goodness.
For something more substantial, we share some Calamari and BBQ Octopus from the seafood stand. No name in particular, just some delicious calamari fritti and perfectly seasoned baby octopus.
Just hanging outside nonna's house like the good kids we are! Unfortunately for me, my appetite could not be as enthusiastic as I was, so I had to pass on the Nutella Crepes, Gelati, Granita and the Ricotta Canolli - yes, you know you are sick when you pass up the Canolli.
We head to Vanilla Room to escape the heat, my forehead literally felt like it was on fire! They were serving jugs of Sangria for $15, and originally I had passed it up - but the heat got the better of me of course! Lucky for me, my very patient and caring Demos takes me home, I had enough excitement for a sick person - but it just shows that nothing can keep me away from my food! Besides, it was the last day of October - what better way than to end October, aka Good Food Month?

Despite feeling Deathly and getting approximately 4 hours of sunlight, it was still a fun weekend. The best part of food fairs and festivals is the way that it brings friends together, and you can sit on the sidewalk sharing a plate of food, love it. Here's to making every month Good Food Month! Until the next post everyone, Happy Eating!

Moncur Terrace, Woollahra (Let's do Brunch - SIFF 2010)

Yes, its all about Back-to-Back Brunches here at The Empty Fridge, and on a beautiful sunny saturday morning in Sydney we headed for a yummy brekky feed at Moncur Terrace.

As we were walking through leafy Woollahra, we were practically melting! It honestly felt like the middle of summer at 11 am, and there were several sun-hungry people who had their beach bags in tow and walked past us heading towards Bondi. Although I would have loved to spend the morning laying at the beach, we were hungry for some Brunch - the sun will still be out the rest of the day, we thought.
Moncur Terrace is a very casual and relaxed Bistro at the Woollahara Hotel. As we sit down inside the now sun-filled outdoor garden area, we can't help but joke that it's the poor-man's Bistro Moncur.. especially as we are here on a mission to try their $25 'Let's do Brunch Special'. This makes choosing what to eat that much easier - and my $25 "meal" came with a glass of Brown Brothers Prosecco. Champagne or Sparkling wine Breakfasts are perfectly fine in my books. However, you can choose between a glass of Prosecco, a glass of Coopers light, bottle of  Aqua Panna still water or San Pellegrino Sparkling Mineral water if you prefer.

Demos's asks me: "I know it's not even midday yet - but they have Peroni on tap here". As I look around, our fellow brunch-ers are already hitting the vino and the beers - so let the man have his Peroni! Although I would have preferred a coffee with my meal, the Prosecco is a light and crisp prelude - I'm not a fan of Prosecco at the best of times (I have this weird aversion to anything overly carbonated, I don't drink cola at all!) but I enjoyed sipping my breakfast bubbles under the very very hot sun. Oh yes, we should re-name this blog to "Dezza and Gezza - the boozehounds"
The dish that Bistro Moncur offer for the "Let's do Brunch" event are their Sweet Corn Fritters with Barossa Bacon, Poached egg, Avocado and caramelized onion on toasted sonoma bread. My main concern when having corn fritters is that some places might add a sneaky bit of coriander in the batter, and coriander is my kryptonite. So because of this silly food allergy of mine I always have to check and yay! I have the green light!

Look at that perfectly poached runny egg! Corn Fritters are my absolute favourite breakfast dish and the the Moncur Terrace version is absolutely delicious!  The fritters batter itself is sweet - like a hotcake - and not floury at all. The kernels of sweet corn are a welcome burst of flavour, and I smash up some avocado to go with it - creamy goodness! The caramelized onion were sweet and mushy, and spread like a thick butter on the bread. Bacon always adds that salty punch, and this is a very lean piece. I could have done with an extra rasher and a bigger piece of bread, but its all about quality here and not quantity so I cant be Ms. greedy guts. Besides, I need to practice my portion control  ;D
Wagyu Burger - $23.00

Demos decides to skip a traditional breakfast meal as soon as he see's Wagyu Beef Burger on the Menu - with a his beer in hand he has such a huge grin on his face as soon as this towering burger arrives.
This has to be one of the better Wagyu burgers we have had. At $23 dollars, it does not dissapoint with its melt in your mouth patty. The minced wagyu rump is absolutely delicious and juicy. It is perfectly seasoned and stacked with all the trimmings - pickles, beetroot, tomatoes...everything you can see in the cross section above was delicious down to the last crumb of the bun. Demos even cut me a little quarted and plonked it on my plate "There - that way you can't say I dont share." True love is sharing your Wagyu Burger, and not just the shoestring fries on the side.
Yes, my inner child cannot help it when there is a squeeze-y bottle of ketchup nearby
Although Moncur Terrace offers just one yummy dish with minimal bells and whistles for the Brunch Special, the quality was top notch and I would visit again to try the other dishes they had on offer. By the time we finished our meal though, the storm clouds were hovering around us - which was very confusing as we were still a little sunburnt from sitting in the sunshine while enjoying our awesome meal. Lucky for us, the torrential downpour started as soon as we got into our cars. Our afternoon of sitting by the pool went up in smoke, but at least our tummies were satisfied. Win Win.

Bitton Gourmet Cafe, Alexandria (Let's do Brunch - SIFF 2010)

Hands up if you like sleep-in's.
There are days when it's just inevitable. The sun is shining, the house is peacefully quiet and there is nothing that you can tear you away from the comfort of your bed and fluffy pillow...except, perhaps the thought of a nice hearty breakfast. Fortunately, the Crave Sydney International Food Festival is on and there are heaps of choices...so Let's Do Brunch!

We arrived at Bitton Gourmet only to see that so many Sydneysiders had the same idea. After a very short wait, we were lead to our balcony seats with a view of leafy neighbourhood and quickly chose our brekky selections. David Bitton was milling around the tables, greeting his guests. The ever so charming David Bitton stopped by and remarked, how my mom's aka Mrs Fridgemagnet's face complemented the beautiful day!
Mrs Fridgemagnet ordered the full French style Brunch special for $25 - with the Fresh Berry Frappe and Bircher Museli with Pear and Almond to kick things off. The Berry Frappe was a refreshing start, and has a well balanced sour kick. The Museli serving was delicious and had a nice crunch to it.
Of course we need out coffee fix, so a skim cap is in order! I start things off with my picolo latte. Our coffees were made and served by David himself and he pops by for a chat, such a great host! Definitely a great start.
I choose not to have the Brunch special, and try something else from the Breakfast menu for a bit of variety. The Omelette with Free Range Ham, spinach and Goats Cheese catches my eye and. It was a delicious choice of course - and it won me over with the generous serve of ciabbata toast. I just dont understand how you can serve eggs for breakfast with no carbs at all! This dish was a breakfast for champions in my book - the goats cheese gave it a nice bite and it tasted much more special than the average ham and cheese omelettes. I would love to try the Truffle Scrambled eggs on my next visit.
Mrs Fridgemagnet tucks into her eggs benny - and it looks to die for with the hollandaise sauce poured over. The toasted english muffin is topped off with spinach, a perfectly poached egg, smoked salmon and hollandaise.
It was such a busy morning at the cafe, and there was a bit of a wait between the drinks and the food - but we didnt mind at all because all of the staff were so attentive and friendly despite being run off their feet.
The shelves display The Bitton line of Gourmet Products - jams, dressings, oils and chutneys - It was any foodies delight. They also sell fresh produce, bread and have a freezer section for ice creams, pasta's and more sauces - a one stop shop for culinary fun.
The last part of the brunch was the french crepe slathered in Bitton Strawberry and Vanilla Jam. It was a lone crepe, and I could have easily had another 10 or so as it was fully of buttery goodness. Of course you could also order this from the breakfast menu and receive a more substantial stack.
Mrs Fridgemagnet was in awe of all the products and was already thinking of hampers she could put together for friends and family as potential Christmas presents. Got to love mothers..they always are well prepared! We both had a good laugh when we found the Coriander pesto (I have a bad history of allergic reactions to Coriander - it tends to pop up unexpectedly where ever  we dine)
Overall it was a great brunch and I think that the menu Bitton served up for SIFF 2010 was well worth the $25, with a yummy dish, a few extras and a drink included. If you have time to take advantage of this offer before the end of the month, then I would recommend it. However, if you miss out have no fear - as their ALL DAY BREAKFAST is well worth the visit, so you know what that means dear friends..you can sleep in as long as you like and still be able to enjoy a lovely french cafe style brunch.
Bon Appétit!
